Sesame Street

1969 · 56 seasons · 3536 episodes · Kids, Comedy

Created by Lloyd Morrisett, Joan Ganz Cooney, Jim Henson

Kindness is in the air.

On a special inner city street, the inhabitants—human and muppet—teach preschoolers basic educational and social concepts using comedy, cartoons, games, and songs.

Why it's worth watching

Sesame Street is a classic educational show that teaches preschoolers valuable lessons in a fun and engaging way, making it a delightful choice for families.

What it praises

The show emphasizes virtues such as kindness, sharing, and learning, which are essential for young children's development.

For discernment

This is the rare children's program that earns its reputation honestly: it is genuinely educational, treats kindness and cooperation as real virtues, and even portrays faith and reverence without mockery. What a discerning viewer should know is that Sesame Street deliberately tackles heavy subjects other kids' shows avoided — the death of a loved one (the famous Mr. Hooper episode), divorce, and illness — so a few episodes carry real emotional weight for a small child. The only 'flags' are a couple of early-90s bath-time songs with a glimpse of a toddler's backside and a segment discussing breastfeeding, both innocent and non-sexual. There is essentially nothing here for a believer to guard against; the main parental judgment is simply pacing which of the more somber episodes a young child is ready for.

  • NoteCertain episodes deliberately address death, divorce, and serious illness at a preschool level, which can be emotionally intense for the youngest viewers.
