“The year was 1988, a time when it was chilly, but our hearts were fiery, a time when we didn't have much but people's hearts were warm.”
Take a nostalgic trip back to the late 1980s through the lives of five families and their five teenage kids living in a small neighbourhood in Seoul.
Why it's worth watching
A warm, nostalgic Korean drama celebrating neighborhood community, sacrificial parental love, and the deep bonds between five families. It honors family, hard work, and enduring friendship with humor and tenderness. One of the most beloved feel-good dramas for good reason.
What it praises
Family devotion, sacrificial parenthood, friendship, and community.
For discernment
Reply 1988 deserves its reputation: it is one of the warmest portraits of neighborhood life ever filmed, built on parents who quietly bleed for their children and five families who treat each other's kids as their own — a real feast of ordinary faithfulness, generosity, and hard work. It is largely clean, but not spotless. The comedy occasionally leans crude for laughs: high-schoolers passing around erotica, a scene where parents get aroused watching TV and start making out, and a disturbing flasher gag. More seriously, one father figure (a school dean) physically abuses his son, including jabbing a pin into his finger. Add mild profanity in the subtitles, some drinking, and a character misusing sleeping pills — small notes against a genuinely nourishing whole, but worth naming so they don't slip past you.
- SexualityPlayed-for-laughs crude bits: teens reading erotica, parents becoming aroused and making out, and a flasher who pulls down his pants (no nudity shown).
- ViolenceA father (the school dean) repeatedly abuses his son, in one scene pushing a pin into his finger as punishment.
- SubstancesSocial drinking, and a character consumes sleeping pills.
- LanguageMild profanity rendered in the subtitle translation (b-word, s-word type usage).
