This is a genuinely strong coming-of-age story: a spoiled, entitled rich boy is humbled by honest labor on a fishing schooner and reshaped by Manuel, a warm and openly faith-filled Portuguese fisherman who becomes the father figure his money never gave him — humility, work, and mentorship treated as things of real worth. Weigh in, though, that the maturing comes through hard loss: the film is unusually graphic about the fishing trade, showing fish being chopped up and decapitated, and one man who falls from the rigging and loses his legs later drowns himself, a death that lands hard. A key character's death is meant to move you and may be intense. The reverent treatment of faith and the redemptive arc are the payoff, but this is not a soft or sanitized family film.
